Water Conservation Activities
Conserving water is especially important during the prime heat of summer or extreme conditions such as drought. But using water wisely at ANY time helps make a difference, and can also save you money! Keep Omaha Beautiful encourages our community to be mindful of how we use this important natural resource. Below are some simple ways to reduce water use through small actions that really add up!

Do a whole home check to see if there are leaks or drips in sinks, tubs, showers, and outdoor hose connections. If you find one, call a plumber and get it fixed. A faucet that drips at the rate of one drip per second can waste 3,000+ gallons of water per year!
-
Save water by taking shorter showers (not baths), and turning off the tap while brushing your teeth, shaving, washing hands, and/or doing the dishes. These actions can save upwards of 3,800 gallons of water per year. Run full wash loads in washing machines or dishwashers. Consider purchasing water-efficient appliances.
-
Save water by watering a lawn or garden in the early morning instead of in the heat of the day. Set up a rain barrel to collect water runoff from a structure or roof. Landscape with native plants and drought-resistant varieties.
-
Most yards only need 1 inch of water per week, so water ½ inch twice per week, and you’re set. If it rains, you can skip the watering. Leave your grass long when you mow. Longer grass holds moisture better.
